1.
Remember the time when the grass was tall The rain was warm and you broke my fall Laughter loose across empty air Broken walls beyond repair Was it something you dreamed When you had no place to go Was it something you dreamed or something real Not so very long ago? Remember the feeling so deep in your bones When you found yourself left lost and alone You thought nothing could chase it away So open your eyes to the rising day Was it something you dreamed When you had no place to go Was it something you dreamed or something real Not so very long ago? Remember the place so deep in your heart Where you felt your senses quicken and start Some bright morning when the grey dawn lifts You’ll recollect things you missed Was it something you dreamed When you had no place to go Was it something you dreamed or something real Not so very long ago?
2.
Sometimes you try There’s nothing left You’ve taken it as far as it’ll go Sometimes you know What you want is for the best You just have no idea which way to go You know it will grow again You know it will flow again Listen to your heart now can’t you tell You know there’ll be sun again It will all get done again Bring up some water from the well Sometimes you stray Too far from the dawn Daylight seems to bring you crashing down Searching and searching You don’t have what you need And the lights go off all over town You know it will grow again You know it will flow again Listen to your heart now can’t you tell I will be there again When you start to care again Bring up some water from the well Bring up some water from the well Sometimes it all feels stretched down to the wire You don’t feel a thing but the pain You put yourself closer and closer to the fire Looking out across for signs of rain Don’t waste a second now Don’t wait to find out how No longer in your private hell You know it will grow again You know it will flow again Bring up some water from the well Bring up some water from the well Bring up some water from the well

Whole Again 05:13
Nothing stands still as I travel on this road More of this journey than I know Pieces that we lost they seem to fit again Sense it as the breeze begins to blow The places that we’ve been they make so sense to me Just a stream of memories we frame Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again Now I gently take my leave of all of this Make my way to you across the bay Take in the moment on which it all depends Watching as the boats begin to sway But the picture that I see fades so gracefully Leaving the sky like a stain Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again How I long for all the times that we once lived All the waiting hours through which we breathed All the messages I tried too hard to send Stepping through the softened autumn leaves But the moment that I feel, it feels too real to me I raise my eyes and see the branches bend Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again The city hides its care beneath a dying glow We all dwell in hope between its cracks Sometimes you catch a sense of what they try to say Other times you fill in all the gaps The symmetry I see is far too pure to keep Behind my eyes I think of distant friends Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again (whole again) So many stars are dying with a light so pale The glow escapes beneath a leaking door I know that all we seek is living still within We can’t go deeper any more The air that I breath passes in and out of me I close my eyes and slowly count to ten Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again Everything I see it just slips away from me I wish that we could be whole again
4.
Ghost Rhyme 03:13
Sometimes we speak with so many tongues Knowing always what is said and done The mountain at dawn is changing its colours I can’t even pick out one When your voice is far away And nothing seems to chime Can you hear, can you hear Can you hear the echo of the ghost rhyme? I always knew that there would be no end To the water we could draw I know that soon we will swim together In the warm streams near the shore Everything is so simple It all falls into line Can you hear, can you hear Can you hear the echo of the ghost rhyme? There is a place that we know so well It’s easy to slip away and go There’s a space where even time stands still Surrounding us with all we love and know Even though the hours are changing All the years fade into time Can you hear, can you hear Can you hear the echo of the ghost rhyme?
5.
Hidden Heart 02:53
I just don’t know Where we should start I’m lost in the dark With your hidden heart I can’t leave You put it together You pull it apart The unknown power Of your hidden heart Don’t turn away Something keeps me flying up into your light Keeps the birds from flying back to the night Nothing’s clear (nothing’s clear, nothing’s clear) Don’t promise it all Just show me a part I lost in the depths Of your hidden heart I can’t resist Something keeps me flying up into your light Keeps the birds from flying back to the night Nothing’s clear (nothing’s clear, nothing’s clear) You still practice Your secret arts I move towards Your hidden heart I’m almost there
6.
Now the dust is settling on the surface of the night The silence leaves a stillness hanging there The sun goes down on everything the day has thrown at me Leaves a perfect circle in the air I’m left here balancing these thoughts They bring me down but bring you near I’m left here playing tricks with time But they don’t work and you’re not here Hours crawl by around me and every passing thought Draws me back to life in two dimensions In my head your voice reminds me not to count the time Or let me lose track of my direction I’m left here counting falling leaves The clocks go back, nothing’s clear I’m left here playing tricks with time But they don’t fool me and you’re not here (You’re not here now) The ticking of this ancient clock it fills me with a hope That the darkest hours can all be left behind This is time I need alone to feel just what it’s like Take comfort in the solitude I find I’m left here finishing these words You’ll never hear, they disappear I’m left here playing tricks with time But they don’t convince and you’re not here (You’re not here with me)
7.
Waterwheel 04:24
In a place where nothing stays the same I took a path that led away from here Travelled through the dark and through the day When I returned the world had passed a year In a time that felt so bold and free I lost the love that I held dear to me Slipping through like the sand I almost held Fortune played a game I couldn’t see Waterwheel turning – I know your movement so well Waterwheel turning – what keeps you spinning I can’t tell All I feel as I walk these sorry streets Is a fire that always seems to burn too bright One hand gives, another takes away I hear a door that’s closing in the night Waterwheel turning – what can you carry in your flow Waterwheel turning – what keeps you moving I can’t know The river flows on down below the floor I hear it gently gather gathering beneath The sound is clear the water fresh and clean Nothing is so far as out of reach Waterwheel turning – I know your movement so well Waterwheel turning – What keeps you spinning I can’t tell
8.
I can hear her laughter as it echoes round the park I can see her smile as it flashes in the dark At the edge of the road Where all the leaves are turning brown I’ll follow her down I’ll follow her down Follow her down We laughed for a while at the edge of the wood Till the news hit us, stopped us where we stood And as she disappeared It was too late to play the clown I’ll follow her down I’ll follow her down Follow her down There’s nothing like the night to free us from ourselves I took her at her word now only time will tell At the end of the day It can always turn around I’ll follow her down I’ll follow her down Follow her down I’ll follow her down I’ll follow her down Follow her down
9.
Confidence 03:38
A little knowledge goes much further than you think Takes you out of yourself A little magic works its way into a soul You drift away to somewhere else I know that there’s been something To make this come around I need to know the way this story ends Wait for me, unguarded friend Take me into your confidence again An aching heart is making more work than it needs Leaves a shadow wanting more An open secret is beyond the hands of time And whatever lies behind this door Too late will be tomorrow When the day is burning bright And the softest music always ends Talk with me, unguarded friend Take me into your confidence again A fading future is the saddest sight to see It can keep the distance ever great A broken smile will drain the colour from your dreams You will stand where you don’t want to be But you won’t need a secret That eats away the stars You could rest at the sign of the journey’s end Stay with me, unguarded friend Take me into your confidence Take me into your confidence again
10.
Fever Dream 03:12
I lost hope in a desert place I was brought down damp with fear I find myself in a fitful sleep As my demons reappear Now I have nothing that I can give It was taken from me somehow I come to you for a way to live It’s all that matters now Somebody please help me Is this all that it seems? Is the world turned upside down Or am I just lost In a fever dream? Six hours from now I’ll feel the sun The first light of the day Step out of this broken room Strip my fears away In my blood I feel a burning Now I’m caught in its heat I hear voices in the distance But there’s no one on the street Somebody please help me Carry me to the coolest stream Is there another way out of here Or am I just lost In a fever dream?
11.
We walked among the ruins Like unwelcome ghosts And tried to imagine What the stones had seen But we were getting nothing But dust in our eyes Trying to remember a dream The cinema was crowded Then the film was done I tried to recall Any single scene But what had meant so much Didn’t matter now Like trying to remember a dream Like trying to remember a dream And the silence is speaking to me now Calling out for more All the voices are calling to me now From a distant shore I cannot reach out Or try to touch the past Waking up now Won’t set me free Because you are somewhere In the night and I’m Trying to remember a dream Trying to remember a dream
12.
Black Pig 04:43
All you people come and listen Teardrops glisten in your eyes Your hearts with pain will soon be rending At this news of sad demise Deio running to Llwyncelyn Fetched old Matty through the frost Matty swore he’d not recover Sure and certain all was lost Oh how sad of heart are we, oh how sad of heart Oh how sad of heart are we, oh how sad of heart There was grief, tribulation, lamentation When we lost the black pig Then we bought a polished coffin Silver knobs, velvet trim And a vault with bricks and mortar To the church-yard we did bring Oh how sad of heart are we, oh how sad of heart Oh how sad of heart are we, oh how sad of heart There was grief, tribulation, lamentation When we lost the black pig Now my friends my song is ended Note the warning I intend Mind you act with great discretion Better days will come again
13.
Lullaby 02:28
Close your eyes there’s nothing left of the evening Hear the birds as they’re flying on their way Silent moon it shines across the ceiling And tomorrow will be another day Go to sleep with half the world that’s dreaming And all the stars that glisten on your wall Still your thoughts will be there in the morning You’ll forget that you ever dreamed at all Now the sun is setting in the sky See broken colours as they fade All that’s left now is this lullaby The day has ended its parade A little faith for tomorrow will be coming There’s little you can really know for sure The day begins as soon as you awaken And the shadows lie way beyond your door Now the sun is setting in the sky See the colours as they fade All that’s left now is this lullaby The day has ended its parade The day has ended its parade

about

David Lewis’ third CD, Ghost Rhymes, was recorded in Seattle and San Francisco with John Wesley Harding, Chris von Sneidern, Robert Lloyd and also features Seattle legend Kurt Bloch. It contains 13 new songs (three co-written with Harding). It also includes “Black Pig”, unexpectedly recovered from the “folk process” and found to have been originally written by Lewis’ great-grandfather John Owen, a sometime bard of South Wales during the late nineteenth century.
